Master Thesis: Simcenter Hyperlife Assessment for Offshore Gas Turbine Packages
A Snapshot of Your Day
As a master thesis student in our structural analysis team in Finspång, you will test a new way to check that the steel frames carrying our gas turbines on offshore platforms and vessels can handle years of wave-induced movement without cracking. This type of wear is called fatigue, and it is one of the most important safety checks we do.
Today the checks are done step by step: stresses are calculated in one program and then compared with tables from the offshore standard, one direction and one detail at a time. Your thesis investigates whether the software Simcenter Hyperlife can do the same job faster, more consistently and with more insight.
A typical day mixes hands-on analysis work at the computer, discussions with experienced engineers who support you, and writing down what you learn. You will be part of a team where questions are welcome, and you are given real responsibility for your own project. Your results will help decide how Siemens Energy perform these checks in the future and help us deliver safe offshore packages to our customers more efficiently.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Set up fatigue checks of steel frames and welds in Simcenter Hyperlife.
- Compare the results with how the checks are done today, to see if they match.
- Measure how much time and effort can be saved, and what extra information the software provides.
- Find out how the offshore standard can be entered into the software, and where its limits are.
- Write a clear recommendation and a short step-by-step guide for the team.
- Present your findings to engineers and decision makers.
What You Bring
- Your background should be in mechanical engineering, applied physics, solid mechanics or a similar field.
- You are interested in strength of materials and computer-based structural analysis using the Finite Element method.
- Some experience with finite element software (for example Abaqus or HyperMesh) is an advantage but not mandatory, as is some scripting, for example Python.
- You are curious and structured, and you like to test, verify and understand why a result looks the way it does.
- You communicate clearly in writing and speech in English.
- You want your work to make a real difference for how engineering is done in practice.
