Join the world's largest humanitarian network!
The Swedish Red Cross is part of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement, the world’s largest humanitarian network dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable individuals before, during, and after disasters and emergencies. We believe in supporting people regardless of who they are or where they are located.
As one of the 191 National Societies in the movement, the Swedish Red Cross (SRC) contributes to emergency response through various means, providing technical and financial support. Our actions are guided by the fundamental principles of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement : humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.
We are now looking for delegates for our WASH roster available primarily to be deployed to lead or support ERU modules including on water supply ( M40 , M15, WSR ), sanitation ( MSM20 and Fecal Sludge Management) and Public Health ( Community Case Management of Cholera and Infection Prevention and Control).
What does it mean to be part of the SRCs delegate pool?
Swedish Red Cross maintains a roster of trained specialists (delegates) ready to be deployed anywhere on short notice in response to international emergencies (natural disasters, conflicts, war zones or health emergencies). Delegates work closely with the local Red Cross / Red Crescent National Society to provide specific services where local infrastructure is damaged, temporarily out of service, out of reach or insufficient to cope with the needs. Most delegates have a full-time job and permission from their employer to take leave of absence if asked by SRC to deploy. The length of a mission is a minimum 4 but ideally 6 weeks and the delegate receives salary from the Red Cross while on mission.
To be accepted onto SRC’s ERU roster, you must complete our recruitment process (application, interview, reference checks), and appr. 24 hours of online trainings if not already done. Once you have completed the necessary training and courses, you will be included in the ERU roster and may be contacted by SRC when there is are deployment opportunities.
What can you expect?
When deployed as WaSH or support specialist (logistics, finance and administrative expertise), your primary objectives will be to implement inclusive and environmentally conscious emergency WaSH activities and to reduce public health risks among target populations in an emergency response. With a focus on increasing the capacity of the host National Society, working with communities through Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) approaches, aligning with and reinforcing overall movement response efforts, and supporting local authorities or institutions such as Ministries of Health or healthcare facilities. Delegates will work to improve handover and sustainability of any interventions and actively assess and mitigate potential negative environmental impacts where possible.
Working conditions during deployment are often difficult and demanding due to the nature of emergency operations and proximity to disaster-affected areas or war zones. The following conditions are to be expected in the field :
- Very basic living standards ie. tents, shared housing, potential limited electricity access during the mission
- Long hours of work in a demanding context with limited resources
- Movement restriction
- Stressful rapidly changing environment with at times limited information
The principal objectives on WaSH and Public Health ERU deployments are :

Prerequisites for all applicants
You must have the willingness to be deployed to a physically demanding working environment in different contexts and work with various stakeholders. We will be prioritizing to recruit people with an availability of up to 3 months, but those with shorter availability (4 weeks) are also encouraged to apply. Depending on which role and level of seniority, salaries during deployment range from approximately 36.000kr to 42.000kr, excluding DSA.

About our recruitment process
Our recruitment process includes interviews, technical tests and in some cases online tests as well as background checks and reference checks. Final candidates will also be screened against the EU and UN sanctions lists.
Please let us know if you require any specific aid in the recruitment process to ensure an inclusive and fair experience for you.
We accept and consider applications on a continuous basis and will close the recruitment process once the quota is filled.
