As one of the 191 National Societies in the movement, the Swedish Red Cross (SRC) contributes to emergency response through various means, providing technical and financial support. Our actions are guided by the fundamental principles of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement : humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.

We are now looking for delegates for our WASH roster available primarily to be deployed to lead or support ERU modules including on water supply ( M40 , M15, WSR ), sanitation ( MSM20 and Fecal Sludge Management) and Public Health ( Community Case Management of Cholera and Infection Prevention and Control).

What does it mean to be part of the SRCs delegate pool?

Swedish Red Cross maintains a roster of trained specialists (delegates) ready to be deployed anywhere on short notice in response to international emergencies (natural disasters, conflicts, war zones or health emergencies). Delegates work closely with the local Red Cross / Red Crescent National Society to provide specific services where local infrastructure is damaged, temporarily out of service, out of reach or insufficient to cope with the needs. Most delegates have a full-time job and permission from their employer to take leave of absence if asked by SRC to deploy. The length of a mission is a minimum 4 but ideally 6 weeks and the delegate receives salary from the Red Cross while on mission.

To be accepted onto SRC’s ERU roster, you must complete our recruitment process (application, interview, reference checks), and appr. 24 hours of online trainings if not already done. Once you have completed the necessary training and courses, you will be included in the ERU roster and may be contacted by SRC when there is are deployment opportunities.

What can you expect?

When deployed as WaSH or support specialist (logistics, finance and administrative expertise), your primary objectives will be to implement inclusive and environmentally conscious emergency WaSH activities and to reduce public health risks among target populations in an emergency response. With a focus on increasing the capacity of the host National Society, working with communities through Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) approaches, aligning with and reinforcing overall movement response efforts, and supporting local authorities or institutions such as Ministries of Health or healthcare facilities. Delegates will work to improve handover and sustainability of any interventions and actively assess and mitigate potential negative environmental impacts where possible.

Working conditions during deployment are often difficult and demanding due to the nature of emergency operations and proximity to disaster-affected areas or war zones. The following conditions are to be expected in the field :

  • Very basic living standards ie. tents, shared housing, potential limited electricity access during the mission
  • Long hours of work in a demanding context with limited resources
  • Movement restriction
  • Stressful rapidly changing environment with at times limited information

The principal objectives on WaSH and Public Health ERU deployments are :

  • Assessment of needs and resources; planning for inclusive, environmentally-conscious WaSH and public health interventions; monitoring of activities and public-health conditions; preparing and managing handovers and locally relevant exit strategies.
  • To establish access to safe water, sanitation, and / or hygiene for a population by engagement of local market-based solutions, mobilizing community-based labor, contractors, initiating relevant procurements etc.
  • Planning, design, implementation and monitoring of activities with a focus to ensure quality of WaSH and health infrastructure, including mobilization, education and communication targeted at promoting behaviors practices that minimize and prevent the spread of diseases and promote the durability and safe use of WaSH infrastructure.
  • Depending on the context, we are looking for people to fill the following roles :

  • Team leader (manager with experience of emergency WASH and extensive knowledge of IFRC and ERU operational systems and information flows)
  • Sanitation specialist (capable of latrine construction, desludging, fecal sludge treatment and / or solid and medical waste management)
  • Health / hygiene or IPC specialist (with public health and behavior change training or exposure to infection prevention and control measures in clinical environments)
  • Water supply specialist (civil or environmental engineer or technician, hydrogeologist)
  • Logistics or Support specialist (with experience of field logistics, procurement, market analyses, contracting, transport, fleet management and / or field finance and administration)
  • Essential skills and experience

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in one of the disciplines relevant to the following areas : Engineering, Environmental Sanitation, Geology, Hydrology, Public Health, Logistics, or other relevant and equivalent work experience in humanitarian or development assistance.
  • At least 3 years professional experience in WaSH, Public Health, Logistics, or Finance / Admin in development and / or emergency humanitarian contexts.
  • Strongly preferable

  • Red Cross / Red Crescent experience
  • Proven skills in training, facilitation, coaching or mentoring.
  • Proven skills in coordination, assessment and planning as well as knowledge of logistics / procurement procedures
  • Experience or training in environmental assessments, climate mitigation or adaptation, gender, protection and / or social inclusion aspects of WaSH and Public Health crises
  • Public health outbreak and / or armed conflict experience is a strong asset
  • Experience and / or interest in developing operational leadership, team management, and program management capacities
  • Prerequisites for all applicants

  • Based within 12 hours proximity to Stockholm, or previously engaged in Swedish Red Cross field-based positions
  • Minimum three years of work experience relevant to your profession
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and competence in other language of interest : French, Spanish, Arabic or Portuguese
  • Experience in fragile security and / or conflict settings, HEAT and / or security risk management trainings
  • Computer literacy (ie. Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, email, Sharepoint).
  • Driving license (class B – manual gearbox)
  • Ability to pass medical clearances and manage any known health conditions
  • You must have the willingness to be deployed to a physically demanding working environment in different contexts and work with various stakeholders. We will be prioritizing to recruit people with an availability of up to 3 months, but those with shorter availability (4 weeks) are also encouraged to apply. Depending on which role and level of seniority, salaries during deployment range from approximately 36.000kr to 42.000kr, excluding DSA.

    About our recruitment process

Final candidates will also be screened against the EU and UN sanctions lists.
